Fun With Mall Security

The Mall in Columbia

My mother asked me to pick her up a DSLR on my latest trip to the states, because of the lower cost even after exchange. I was happy to accomodate her and picked up a Nikon D50 at Ritz Camera for $499 US.

The first one I bought turned out to have a bad AF sensor so I took it back to the mall today. Since I would not be back in Maryland for some time I decided to try out the camera in the mall, taking a few photos here and there.

Just before I reached the mall exit, a man with a sportcoat on approaches me, shakes my hand and introduces himself as a higher up in mall security. He then asks me why I am taking pictures in the mall.

I explain that I wanted to know that this particular camera was working before I left the mall and was just testing its functionality. The story checks out at a glance as I have a big bag maked Ritz Camera with a Nikon box clearly visible, and the guy is sharp enough to see this.

He asks that in the future I test the camera in the store as photography is not allowed in the mall. Fine, I’m on private property so there’s no point in arguing the security risks of someone taking pictures of the inside of a mall.

Sleep safe Maryland, mall security has protected you again from the threat of Canadians armed with Nikon cameras.
