At the recommendation of one of my clients I stopped by Santa Ramen in San Mateo, CA. I arrived at 5:15 to find that the restaurant didn’t open until 5:30 and also to find myself seventh in a growing line of patrons.
At 5:30 I was showed into a tiny restaurant with a posted capacity of 29 (of which I’d guess at least five were taken up by staff) consisting of a few small tables and a series of counter seats. Some might consider it sparse but compared to the typical Japanese Ramen shop it was spacious.
After ten years back in North America, all I can say is the Ramen tasted like memories. I had the Grilled Pork and Stewed Pork Ramen with Pork flavored broth and it was excellent. Service was good for such a small place and the Yakitori appetizer was good.
For someone who hasn’t eaten in a dedicated Ramen shop in ten years it was just like old times. I’ll be back.
